I wonder if this Staunton/ Lynchburg area jam cover band will settle on a name that's less "under construction" sounding... I guess my impression is that the package definitely includes Jacob Doss, lead singer and guitarist, who, behind glasses, lots of hair, and a beautiful hollow- body turquoise electric guitar, is 19 years old! and playing with his uncle. It seems like the band keeps it in the family of talented musicians if someone is subbing in for drums or bass, but that the group stays busy and keeps moving. 'Gotta love their dedication - they played a great show in the rain. They had to walk through mud to set up, but they did it!
We got a couple of Allman Bros. covers -- Ramblin' Man and Ain't Wastin' Time No More, and a Grateful Dead song or two. And Jacob did a pretty darn good job with Chris Stapleton's Tennessee Whiskey. Eric Clapton (WHAT GREATEST DAY EVER -- the bassist, Kevin Daye, well actually, the whole band crushed this one,) something from Space Jam soundtrack (Fly Like an Eagle!!!) and one of my favorites was definitely Knockin' On Heaven's Door. And Jimi Hendrix! Fun to sing along to so many favorite tunes, and to hear them played so well. The band was friendly and played a great show. We serenaded the group with a verse of Fun. "Some Nights," as well as "Don't Ease Me In," and I've gotta say, it was a big huge treat to get to talk to the band and get a close glimpse at their process and imagine what focus and energy it takes to tour and perform. I think the guys appreciated their paycheck and they definitely earned it. Mentioned my fave VA Bands to them: Don Fredrick and Gold Connections, and wonder if they've ever met "Pelicanesis" from JMU and Lord Nelson... Sally Rose? PS. Lord Nelson is a pretty smooth act, if you ever get to see them, they really raised my spirits. Now that RVA is reopening a little, I'm still just wanting to dip my toes in the water, not dive right in, but MAYBE I'll hit up The Slack Family Band tomorrow at Brews & Banjos, the Camel, VA. Rest In Peace, Jacob Doss, July 2021
